What Qualifications Do I Need?

You do not need to have any specific qualifications to become a CENTRA IDL Franchise holder.

We look for people with experience of support, teaching or similar and with a sympathetic approach.

Experience with different learning needs is an advantage.

Talk to a member of the IDL team about your application and your appropriate skills and experience.

You will be required by law to gain the appropriate CRB/ISA clearance and have the necessary insurance, health and safety and relevant safeguarding policies.

Please access the CRB website for more information: www.crb.homeoffice.gov.uk

Is IDL Suitable for All Ages?

Yes. There are several features which make IDL appropriate for both adults and children.

  • All students begin on IDL at the right level for their own reading and spelling abilities.
  • The simple, visually-accessible format is appropriate for all ages.
  • Students quickly learn to use IDL independently
  • Adults and children enjoy the control and confidence IDL provides

IDL has been used successfully with children as young as five.

For further information, on issues relating to working with the under-8s, you may wish to consult websites such as www.safeguardingchildren.org.uk and www.dcsf.gov.uk/everychildmatters

How Successful is IDL?

IDL has provided superb reading and spelling improvements in IDL Centres around the UK for over 20 years.

Average increases after 26 hours on IDL:

  • 10 months in Reading
  • 11 months in Spelling

This is approximately 4 times the expected rate of progress for these students.

Some individuals can achieve rapid and dramatic increases of over 2 years in 26 hours: rate of progress will vary depending on learning needs.

Can I Open an IDL Centre Anywhere?

This will be assessed on an individual basis, with due consideration given to the location of existing centres.

Consider ease of access for your potential customers.

What Premises are Suitable for IDL Centres?

It is possible to operate an IDL Centre from home. Consider the following when selecting your premises:

A welcoming, non-threatening but professional setting is important.

  • Space: is there enough room to allow each student to work comfortably at a computer?
  • Quiet: is the environment quiet enough to allow students to concentrate?
  • Privacy: students will be reading aloud. Is this a comfortable setting for this activity?
  • Parking, access and facilities: is there room for several students at a time?

Before proceeding with your application it is essential that you have access to suitable premises.

What Specifications Does IDL Need?

IDL is simple to use, for both tutor and student. The multisensory nature of the program requires voice recording and playback.

A compatible PC running either Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 which must have the Microsoft.NET Framework version 2.0 or above installed.

  • A Central processing unit (CPU) of 1.6 GHz or above
