How can I get rid of Internet Explorer?
Question: I never use IE (I am a firefox kind of guy) but for some reason it is constantly using >100MB of memory. I try to end the process through windows task manager (and other apps I have), but once I end it, it starts right up again and is using 100MB of memory within seconds. I have also used the add/remove windows components utility to get rid of IE but for some reason IE is still running. As a last resort I tried to delete the folder associated with the program sucking up my memory (C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer), but naturally Windows won't let me do this. Should I just forget about it? Is this some kind of spyware posing as IE (file name iexplore.exe)? How can I get my memory back (computer amnesia...)? Thanks

Well, you can't uninstall it permanently as it's part of Windows now and they prevent it. I had the same problem awhile back when I switched to FF. I kept noticing iexplore.exe in the task manager, kept end tasking it, but it kept coming back. I finally found out what was causing it tho. One of my programs, an anti-virus if I remember correctly, still had IE settings for the update feature. So every time it updated it connected using IE. Once I changed them to use FF instead no more iexplore.exe. One of your programs is still setup to use IE. Find out which one it is and your problem is solved. A temporary fix that I used while looking for the culprit was to rename the iexplore.exe. Change the extension and it won't be able to open.
Just go to your 32 bit files (Programs x86) and go to the Internet Explorer for it. Create a shortcut for it and put it on the desktop or pin it to your start menu
Can i correct alot of your decription: (starting from the top) 1. firefox is using around 75MB of memory and IE alone not being used is 50MB. 2. The process will never end because IE is amolst like your firewall, it is the main port for your internet connection, whether your are using your dial up modem port or your local area connection. 3. you can delete the IE program files by selecting the files and right clicking and turning read only off. and 4. iexplore.exe is not spyware but the main process name. PS: I respect that youare using firefox over IE
Sounds as if the IE9 failed to install - there are 2 versions for Windows 7 http://www.filehippo.com/download_intern... You cannot get rid of it........It is bundled with Windows, unless, of course, you are a real hacker. Nor do you want to get rid of it. .wmv files will become a problem with Firefox. Don't get me wrong, I use Firefox and Opera before IE all the time, but some times it is a necessary "evil". Also, IE is needed in order to get any Windows updates, and just for that reason, you need to just deal with it. Upgrade to IE 7 though, it looks different and takes some time to get used to, but it is MUCH SAFER than IE 6 and has multi-tabbed browsing, which is a plus over IE 6. Good Luck!!!!! Using ie6 will fk things up. Its 8 years old and full of security holes. You have to upgrade to a newer version or else use another browser such as firefox, etc or else you will be prone to viruses, etc.
