Question: The Screen says Please insert the Compact Disc labeled 'Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 CD' into your CD-ROM drive (D:) and then click OK. You can also click OK if you want files to be copied from an alternate location, such as a floppy disk. First off, i would like to know if i do this, can i download linux after my computer is reset? Because i dont have any of the discs for Windows period. I was given this computer by someone and they also dont have the discs. Lastly, is linux an ok operating system if it is possible?

Not sure what brand computer you have? I would go to the site of the computer brand/ H.P. ETC. See if they have a key your press to restore your computer. (EXAMPLE F10 key while booting) You may have a FAT32 file hidden on your hard drive which will restore the computer to factory settings. Try this all first and make sure you have the computer up and running before you add any other operating systems. Or browsers! Good Luck.
Repair XP by install over the top of existing system 1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order. 2. You're going to need to find you a copy of an XP disc, pop it in, and let it finish installing itself because it sounds like your operating system was not installed yet, installed completely, or something is causing it to reinstall itself.
What do you mean by "reset". Did you reformat and re-install Windows?
