Question: In a near DEAD EVEN fight, many would have called Norton-Holmes a Draw, which would have resulted in Ken { The Champion } remaining the champion. In that scenario, Ali could have easily said to critics "Hey, I ALREADY beat this guy 2 out of 3 times" { although you could DEFINITELY reverse one of those two wins in Ken's favor } The bottom line is that Ali could say "I ALREADY BEAT HIM".......He could say the same thing even IF Earnie Shavers were to immediately become Champion. He could again say "I ALREADY BEAT HIM" BUT, Larry Holmes becoming Champion while showcasing to some degree "Ali like" attributes, complicated things a bit. Ali had NEVER faced Holmes as a professional, BUT the "Easton Assassin" had learned extensively from him as a sparring partner, and often looked "Aliesque" in his performances. Then, to further make things awkward......, In the SAME YEAR of 1978, that Ali regains one of the belts from the lightly regarded Leon Spinks, Holmes wins the other half of the Championship against a guy in Norton, who by many accounts had overall "gotten the better" of Ali himself! THAT MAKES ALI'S 78 RETIREMENT BY SOME STANDARDS, "INCOMPLETE" Ali HAD to come back by public demand to fight the ONLY GREAT fighter of his era whom he had not beaten. BUT IF NORTON-HOLMES is declared a Draw { which it EASILY could have been } Norton would stay the Champ. Holmes would have then been dismissed, and Ali would have NO NEED to prove anything further. Did the Judges failure to rule Norton-Holmes a Draw in some way FORCE into action the final and DUBIOUS chapter in Ali's career?
