They only come with a 90 day warranty and have a higher failure rate. The service contacts are normally just a one time replace contract. You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down. What cost you less today is going to cost you more tomorrow. Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve. Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. Lenovo will not allow people to read instruction on how to access the BIOS menu or to get info on their puters on their web site unless you connect to them thru Facebook. They do this so they can spy on their users. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them. Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system. Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom. Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company. Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers. Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them. ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it. Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power. Chrome books are useless. They are designed by Google to make you dependent on Google. If you can not access the web then you can not do anything. Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen. Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate. Choose wisely. :)
I am a veteran with an EE and CompE. I would not recommend a CompSci if you are at all interested in the hardware and electronic aspects of the world you're interfacing into. If all you want to do is write code, then CompSci would be your path, but just know that it's NOT an engineering degree and by the time you graduate you are already 10 years behind industry. Add to that the fact that the Army will not necessarily use your skills and you will be way behind industry by the time you try to enter the civilian sector. With an engineering degree, those principles will remain fundamental since they are physics based and the laws of physics and mathematics aren't changing any time soon, unlike the varying platforms and computer architectures that will morph faster than a virus. Whatever you choose, don't do it based on a movie. Coding is mostly grunt work and is anything but exciting unless you're part of a new launch. It's like being on an assembly line where your part is your part and the rest of the romance is non-existent. Be careful about taking advice from those who have never been in industry, too. Academia is far removed from industry. Good luck and good on you for your future service!
I agree, get a Lenovo laptop. Right now on their website their promoting discount prices and free shipping. Either get the or IdeaPad Y410p or Y510p. (The only diff. i see between the two is that the Y410 has an integrated camera and a 14'' screen. While the 510 has a 15.6' screen with no camera. In my opinion integrated camera's are bad). If you do plan to buy one hurry fast because i think there promotion ends on August 21 I think. So rememebr to activate the coupon upon purchase if you choose it. Computer Science is a more general degree and you can use it to specialize in a variety of IT-related fields, including networking, maintenance and repair, databasing, programming, web development, etc. Software Engineering is more specifically targeted to programming/software development. If you majored in CS with the intent to specialize in programming, there would be a lot of overlap between the two degrees.
Macbook air 13 is good if you like to coding but it is bad only for playing games.It have very good ram ,processor , it virus resistant so you do not need to spend $ 60 every to buy anti virus,and you can run it for 4-5 years.It contain inbulit photoshop,video editing software cool front cam with 720p.and it is also a type to handeld roughly even when it looks too slim unique design the only worst thing of it is HDD it contains only 256GB , you can run windows on it by using Parellel desktop .You may know that programmers use mac book and other reason is buy it quickly because for college student it is little discount of $ 150 on it.
Industrial Engineering is a very broad major with lots of jobs, areas of work, and industries that you can work in. The pay is relative to Mechanical and Civil Engineers +/- $2000/yr. They can even work as Mechanical or Civil engineers themselves since 2-3 years of classes are shared or very similar. The advantage of Industrial Engineering is that you are essentially a problem solver. You can work anywhere and do so many things. The starting pay is comfortable and very high with years of experience. You would work 40 hours per week. Not a very stressful job unless you take a management position. However, it is a fun job with a great work/life balance. Computer Science pays more most of the time. Some Comp Sci jobs start at lower than engineering jobs like at $40,000 and some start higher than engineering jobs at $80,000. My friend started off getting paid $85,000 per year at Xerox right out of school while another in comp sci started off with $45,000 at a company I never heard of. If you work for a well known company, or a company that is doing well, you are more likely to get paid a higher salary. They work longer hours and they sometimes have to work extra hours from home. Lots of computer work typing constantly. The reason why they usually get higher salaries(I think) is because of longer work hours and a because it is a more repetative job that required you to be on a computer all day. Industrial Engineering will require more science like Chem 1 & 2 with labs, Physics: Mechanics and Physics: Electricity and Magnetism, Material Science, Thermodynamics, and more. It also require more math like Differential Equations, Calc 1 & 2, Linear Algebra, Probabilities, Statistics, and Matrices as well as Engineering Economics, Statics, Dynamics, and Strength of Materials. C++ Programming is also a required course as well as IT in engineering where you learn about SQL and data mining. These are all tough courses. With Comp Sci, you would take more courses in computer languages like C, C++, Objective C, Java, SQL, HTML, and more. This knowledge will allow you to develop websites, apps, and softwares. Some math and basic science is till required, but not to the extent of Industrial Engineering. I may be biased because I am an Industrial Engineer, but the Compsci info I gave is also accurate because I have friends in that field. I think Industrial Engineering is better.
