Accidentally uninstalled Ethernet Controller?
Question: I'm on another laptop to ask because I can't get internet on my crappy vista because I accidentally uninstalled Ethernet Controller. I don't have the disc. It wants me to browse the computer for driver software but it says "Windows was unable to install [it]." Windows stops responding every time I try to open control panel and network and sharing center. Please help.

Well basically you can try to download driver from the internet, put in in the flash and install it on the computer without the driver.Usually you can find drivers online if you type inside driver name but if Vista shows driver name as unknown driver then I have put link below how to find driver using drivers Device ID.

You need to get on another computer, bring a USB thumb drive and download the correct drivers. You'll need to figure out which ethernet driver/board you have, often it is in your PCs spec. Some PC wizard can probably answer on how to get the card spec online, but usually you can just google your pc and find it or if a dell, type in the service tag number. I keep ALL my drivers in c:/drivers or some area, because you never know when you will need them again!
Unfortunately since you said install on main disk and not side by side option. You have totally erased your windows. Unfortunately there is no way to get it back without buying a windows OS again. It is a loss I agree, but it's not maybe a total loss. With linux you won't need a virus protection. But if your using Firefox I suggest installing a few extensions like NoScripts, Adblock, and Web of Trust if its available. If you like chrome I suggest installing NotScripts, Adblock and Web of Trust (WOT). Also visit the www.ubuntuforums.org for more stuff. Also if you ever want to look for a program. Go to the manufacturer's site and find your computer and there should be a download area for drivers if theres no internet on the other computer copy the drivers over on a flash drive
Well, it kind of sounds like you un-installed a Windows component, but I've never heard of anyone un-installing a disk drive, lol. Anyway, what you should do is get your copy of Windows Vista that you used to install Vista on the computer, and then try to turn it on. When the computer starts, press the F2 button or F8 button, or maybe the F5 button (this is to get into the BIOS, if you already know how get in there, and if you don't, while the computer is booting up look for some text that looks similar to "Press F[X] to enter settings." where the [X] is a number) and go over to the tab where you see a list of boot-able devices (like your hardrive, floppy drive, and CD drive). Change the settings so that your computer checks for CD's and floppy disks BEFORE the hardrive. This is important. Now just let the computer run like usual. Eventually, you should get to the menu you saw when you first installed Vista (if you didn't, and it came pre-installed, then put in the recovery disk instead of the Windows Vista disk and follow the steps as usual). Click the repair button, just keep clicking next, click save documents (or whatever they named it now, I haven't installed anything but 95, 98, 2000, and XP and they all had it called Repair) and hit next. Then try to boot up your laptop. If everything worked well, then you're in the clear and ready to use it (it will have re-installed the drivers for the CD drive, so you won't need to do it yourself unless you had to install anything manually for it). If it didn't, well, sell it on Ebay and buy a better one. Maybe a Vaio or something lol.
