Question: I am having a HSG test next week and I want to know if anybody has ever gotten pregnant after the test. I know that and HSG test is only a diagnostic test not a procedure to repair any damage/ blockage on the tubes. Can you share your experience? What can I expect?

The HSG test can be very uncomfortable and it can also be nothing. It all depends on your tolerance for pain and what kind of cramping you are used to...My fertility specialist actually prescribed an antibiotic for me to take just the day before ,day of and day after to prevent infection. they also instructed me to take 2 or 3 Advil or Motrin an hour or so before the procedure to help reduce the pain and cramping. I truly believe that the test often blows open your tubes even if there are no blockages or tears, etc... Ive read of many women including myself who conceived within 3-4 months of the procedure. (I conceived in 2 months) What they will do is insert a speculum into your vagina to open your cervix. They will procede to insert a catheter with a dye in it that will squirt into the tubes and uterus in order to highlight it so they can see it on a computer screen. They will stop to print films of the tubes during the procedure as they go along. They may just freeze the screen and save the view to print afterward. The cramping usually occurs when the dye is released and the tubes are forced to open somewhat..the technician may even warn you when he/she feels you may experience the cramping. You will probably lay flat on a table with your knees up and feet planted most of the time unless the Dr or tech needs you to move. Th ewhole procedure normally lasts for about 15-20 minutes and the longest part will most likely be inserting the speculum and inserting the catheter.. the xray of the tubes and uterus athemselves goes fairly quickly. It is worth it to have the test because not only can it open up the tubes for you, it can provide the Dr with crucial information should you indeed have any blockages or fibroids or scar tissues. ITS all in your head....my husband came home on leave and we took no precautions and what not...I wanted to give him a child, because if he passed there would always be a part of him still here, yeah it was hard because he was gone for 15 months, but i can also see where your comeing from about takeing the pill or whatever you did...some women get scared and dont want have to deal with it on their own...now if you were like months along thats a different story...but anyways I dont think you are pregnant it doesnt sound that way... I have just had this test done on Friday, and my referring fertility Dr said that if there was a slight blockage, the dye that is pushed through the tubes can sometimes clear the blockage, and that pregnancy rates increase in the 3 months following this test. the test was not painful for me, although there was a slight scratching feeling, however, I did cramp more than usual in the 24 hrs following the test. My test has showed a completely blocked right fallopian tube, and I am still trying to get more info on what this means for me and my hopes of conceiving soon.
