Question: I dont have an internet connection on my linux machine, and it was built to play games but I lost the driver cards for my video card and i got a new harddrive. When you install ubuntu it already has the drivers for like everything. But i cant play my games...

linux ubuntu. fedora is ok, but ubuntu rocks. wine can run many windows applications, but not all (there's a compatibility list on the site). if you run linux, you will avoid internet explorer, the worst browser ever shipped (you should install e.g. firefox on windows, even in the case you decide to keep windows, and "trash" virtually IE). you don't need microsoft office suite on windows, since there's openoffice, so you don't need them on linux too (and rememeber, if you do not want compatibility issues also with other versions of microsoft office, do not use docx and other -x formats of the last ms office suite) for the "etc" programs, you can check wine http://www.winehq.org/ if you will try ubuntu, maybe you can read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Wine security is surely better on "linux" systems than windows system (no matter how may and good spywares, antivirus and so on you install for windows...). about speed, maybe linux will go faster, but a clean windows won't run so slower
Because programs are written and compiled for specific operating systems. If something is written for one operating system, other operating systems can't understand the commands. Think of it as different languages - Windows speaks German, Linux speaks Swahili. You try to give Linux commands in German and it doesn't know what you're telling it to do. This is why Mac software won't work under Windows, and Windows software won't run under Mac OS.
Brian, it is not clear what you mean with scratched HD. I also don't see the connection with hardware damage and the need to replace Windows. Did you loose your Windows CD's? Anyway, Ubuntu is lighter and faster than Windows Vista. If your computer has a hard time with Ubuntu, it would probably be worst with Vista. As per missing features, there are several posts on Ubuntu Forum concerning Sony Vaio and I also read something about a company named Emperor Linux that sells setup advice for specific lap-tops under Linux. In the Ubuntu Forums there seem to be solutions for most of the problems, but regrettably not for the memory card issue. As said before, most lap-tops are "very proprietary terrain". You could have the best of the two worlds by having a Windows partition in your computer. I myself am not able to handle that though. For the future, if you decide to get a new notebook, there is a number of distributors that make fully Ubunty-compatible and supported computers. Good luck!
Linux and windows are not the same operating system. Linux doesn't run .exes natively period. You need to download wine or get cedega if you want to play windows games/programs. Even that isn't reliable. I also agree with the first guy change your name you poser!
