Help with internet problems (pages won't open)?
Question: I would like to apologize in advance for the long post, but I'm lost here. I am having huge problems trying to open webpages.These problems started earlier tonight, after windows installed "13 updates" to my computer. After updates were installed, I tried connecting to the internet, then this happened "Error 734: The PPP Link Control Protocol Was Terminated" After several minutes of hitting 'connect', I was able to connect. But when I click on internet explorer, the att.yahoo page won't open. Instead, I've gotten a white screen (icons like the toolbar are still there), and at the bottom left reads 'waiting for att.yahoo' or 'connecting to att.yahoo' It stays like this completely. I tried typing in another website like google, but that doesn't work. I've even tried browsing the web with mozilla firefox, but same problem. I thought using system restore would work, but I've gotten this message "Restoration incomplete Your computer cannot be restored to (date chosen) System Checkpoint No changes have been made to your computer To choose another restore point, restart System Restore" I don't know what to do. I ran a full virus scan via Kaspersky Anti Virus 2011, but nothing showed up. In fact, Kaspersky can't even run its scheduled (midnight) update, most likely caused by the this event. I really do believe all of this is because of the windows installing those updates. I would really, REALLY apperciate the help in getting things back to normal with my internet (webpage) connection. Oh, my computer is a Dell desktop, and the operating system is Windows XP. The main browser is Internet Explorer 7. Thanks for the suggestions, but they didn't work. I can't open any links because they don't come up. When I try connecting to the internet, it's still the same "waiting for att.my.yahoo.com...." I also believe the system restore is completely corrupted. I tried restoring to 4/11, 4/9, 4/1, and even 3/18., but no dice. And again, I believe this is because of Windows installing 13 updates.

Do not reinstall your HDD! there is a chance to make your network adapter into default settings. The software is winsock, it allows to fix problems such as ip config, corrupted registry files, network settings, clear dns cache. (this will make all the settings in default and fix issues) Here is the Link: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html when download finish double click the file and click "fix" then you have to restart the PC. (I'm sure this will work) New Reply: Hi again. If you have a friend or use another computer and download the "winsock" and put in on a USB. So you can put it on your PC (try this step first). Also you can uninstall updates by going "add\remove" and there is an option says "show updates" check the box and find the updates which cause this to happen. Hope I helped ;)
I tend to run into problems with Internet Explorer. My suggestion would be to try and use Firefox instead of IE. If that doesn't help that you may have to go the extreme route and get new memory for your computer or upgrade your PC entirely. You can also try ridding your computer of old files and programs that you don't use to help clear some room on your memory card. Good luck!
Use the backup and restore tool and choose a backup point like two days old that should do the trick :D. Then check the updates windwos will try to install and dont install some one related to internet. Good luck.
What is the type of the connection - direct LAN or modem (with or without router) ? How do you connect - wired (USB or LAN) or wireless? What is your internet access contract (firm and type of)? Post this again with the correct information.
The best thing is to format your drive and then choose don't check for updates while installing your windows
